The artists selected in 2026

The five artists chosen for FUTURES Photography 2026 were selected by François Hébel, artistic director of CAMERA, and Giangavino Pazzola, curator and programme coordinator, following research conducted by the Turin-based institution and recommendations from a committee of experts comprising Daniele De Luigi (curator and scholar of contemporary photography for Fondazione Ago Modena – formerly FMAV – and Giovane Fotografia Italiana | Premio Luigi Ghirri, Reggio Emilia), and Giuseppe Oliverio (artistic director of PhMuseum, Bologna).

Filippo Barbero (Florence, 1992)
His practice explores intimate narratives and themes such as memory, belonging and the concept of place. He is the author of the book Borderland, published by Witty Books, 2025. His work has been exhibited in national and international institutions, including Filter Photo, Chicago (2025); Ogden Museum of Southern Art, New Orleans (2023), Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich (2023), 254Forest Art Space, Brussels (2023) and BASE Milano (2023). His work has received numerous awards and recognitions, including Penumbra Members Gallery (Penumbra Foundation), Centre Forward (Centre for Fine Art Photography), and Italian Panorama (PhotoVogue Festival). His work has been published in several national and international magazines, both online and in print, including The New Yorker, PhotoVogue, Der Greif, Penumbra Foundation, Lucie Foundation, Dear Dave Mag, Artribune, Float Magazine, The Greatest Magazine, Collater.al and many others.

Davide Degano (Milazzo, 1990)
Davide Degano lives and works between Italy and the Netherlands. He graduated in Visual Arts from the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague, where he received an honourable mention for the Paul Schuitema Award, and then in Photography from KASK – Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, where he was awarded the Fonds Roger De Conynck Prize (2024-2025). His research explores how images shape memory, identity and the collective imagination, focusing on the stories of borderlands—both geographical and symbolic. In this context, he investigates how national identities have been historically constructed through visual regimes that place certain bodies, territories and stories at the centre, relegating others to the margins. Her photographs have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions hosted by institutions and festivals such as, among others: SCHAUWERK Sindelfingen, Stuttgart (2026), Festival Photo Gaspésie, Québec (2025), Kunsthalle Darmstadt (2025), Museo Friulano della Fotografia (2023).

Sofia Gastaldo (Padova, 2003)
Sofia Gastaldo lives and works in Saint-Denis, in the Paris region. After her first experience in cinema as an assistant director and producer, she approached photography by starting to develop documentary research projects. She is currently studying Sociology at the University of Padua and attended the reportage course at the Jack London School of Literature and Photography (2023). Her research focuses on reinterpreting the social and physical landscape of north-eastern Italy in connection with contemporary global dynamics. Through site-specific projects and interventions, she explores the social aspect of conventions, myths and processes of valorisation or erasure, while on a personal level she explores her relationship with space, her own role, and interest and passion as practices capable of generating connections. She is part of Gaze Magazine’s Nouvel Œil mentorship programme at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie – MEP (2025–2026) and was a finalist at the Nocivelli Award, where she showed her work (2025).

Giulia Gatti (Fabriano, 1995)
Giulia Gatti lives and works in Milan. A lifelong dancer, she began collaborating with various dance companies after moving to Rome. She then began her training and research in the field of photography, studying at the New Institute of Design (NID) in Perugia, where she graduated in 2017. Her projects have recently gained visibility and awards, such as the first prize “Portfolio sul Po” from the national circuit FIAF Portfolio Italia (2019), the Marco Pesaresi Prize for Contemporary Photography (2020), where she presented Su mia madre tira vento, and participation in the Sky Arte format, Le Fotografe (2023). She is currently continuing her journey through South America – including Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Patagonia and Mexico – dedicating herself to explorations and visual essays that combine dance, photography and writing. She has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions including PhotoVogue, Milan (2025), PhEST, Monopoli (2023), SI Fest – Savignano Immagini Festival, Savignano sul Rubicone (2020).

Federica Sasso (Vicenza, 1992)
Federica Sasso lives between Milan, Lake Como and Switzerland. Her work explores the perception of the human body, the interaction between the virtual and the real, and the impact of technology on contemporary life, involving the progressive dissolution of boundaries between photography, video, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and new technologies. Her works have been presented at festivals and galleries, including Les Rencontres de la Photographie d’Arles (2018), PhotoVogue, Milan (2022), Ars Electronica, Linz (2023), La Quadriennale Roma (2023), and Fotografia Europea, Reggio Emilia (2025). Together with sound researcher Luca Pagan, he founded 4E Studio, an interdisciplinary practice that explores the relationship between the human body and technology, investigating the creation of new senses and perceptions that redefine the design of human experience through the innovative use of new technologies. Recent collaborations include the Italian Institute of Technology (Department of Rehabilitation Technologies), the University of Genoa (Department of Robotics), the University of Bologna (Department of Computer Science) and the University of Milan (Department of Philosophy).
