Talk

Euphoria. Photography as therapy

Talk | Thursday 5 November 2026, 6.30pm

On Thursday, 5 November at 6.30 pm, CAMERA hosts the presentation of Euphoria, the book by Giuseppe Mastromatteo born from the need to reconstruct, through photography, a family memory marked by absence and trauma. At the heart of the volume is the diagnosis of schizophrenia received by his sister Gabriella, an event that profoundly shaped the history of his family and led to decades of silence.

Through the use of hyperrealistic masks reproducing the faces of his family members as they appeared in the 1970s, Mastromatteo builds a bridge between past and present, creating a body of work that uses photography to confront pain, absence, and remembrance. Throughout the pages of Euphoria, developed together with psychiatrist Corrado De Rosa, the personal story intertwines with a broader reflection on memory, identity, and representation. More than the account of a private experience, the book becomes a journey of processing and self-discovery, inviting audiences to reflect on the power of photography as a tool for reconstructing memory and gaining a deeper understanding of oneself.
