Lee Miller, anatomy of an icon: from Fashion to History

Thursday at CAMERA | 11 December 2025, 6.30pm

Lee Miller’s destiny was inextricably linked to that of Vogue, the world’s most prestigious fashion magazine. It all began in 1927 with a chance encounter in New York: a 20-year-old Lee Miller was saved from being hit by a car by a stranger. That stranger was Condé Montrose Nast himself, founder of the publishing house of the same name.
He launched her modeling career, promoting her image as a modern woman: beautiful, powerful, and slightly androgynous. But Lee Miller’s journey did not end there. Her ambition led her to become a photographer herself, allowing her to experience what it was like to be behind the camera. She was even hired as a photographer by Vogue in 1940 and, as a war correspondent, documented the horrors of concentration camps for the magazine’s pages.

The talk on Thursday, December 11, at 6:30 pm, will retrace the highlights of this unique journey through images that have left an indelible mark on the history of fashion photography and beyond.

With the participation of:
Francesca Marani, Senior Photo Editor Vogue Italy
Walter Guadagnini, curator of Lee Miller. Works 1930-1955
