New Documentary Strategies. A research
Tuesday 2 December 2025, 6.00pm
As part of New Documentary Practices – FUTURES 2025, an educational programme on photography and contemporary imagery to be held at CAMERA from 2 to 5 December 2025, Giangavino Pazzola’s research project entitled Nuove Strategie Documentarie (New Documentary Strategies) will be presented.
In the Italian cultural context, concepts such as post-photography and meta-photography have enjoyed widespread visibility and reflection, while theoretical approaches such as those revolving around the ideas of “speculative documentary” and “new documentary strategies” – already active in Northern Europe – remain largely unexplored. These models emphasize the aesthetic, political, social, and technological specificities of photography. Pazzola’s research examines the work of Italian photographers active after 2004, including Lorenzo Vitturi, Arianna Arcara, Federico Clavarino, Marina Caneve, Salvatore Vitale, Silvia Rosi, and Karim El Makthafi, adapting them to this interpretative framework. This study traces a genealogy of the authors in Italian photographic history and, at the same time, places their practice within a broader international critical horizon.
Giangavino Pazzola’s research project New Documentary Strategies is supported by Strategia Fotografia 2024, an initiative of the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
The programme’s partners are FUTURES Fondation, Fotodok Fondation and CAMERA – Italian Centre for Photography.
