Not just black. A discussion on photography and fashion in the Italy of the Ventennio
I Giovedì in CAMERA | Special Tuesday | 27 May 2025, 6.30pm

On Tuesday, May 27, at 6:30 pm, CAMERA hosts the presentation of the book La moda nell’Italia fascista (Fashion in fascist Italy), published by Dario Cimorelli Editore (2025). The book focuses on the relationship between fashion and fascism in 1920s and 1930s Italy and is accompanied by a rich selection of photographs from the period that highlights how the regime influenced not only the textile industry, but also the concepts of gender, national identity and modernization.
Through a detailed analysis, Eugenia Paulicelli explores the strategies by which fascism exploited fashion as a propaganda tool, imposing aesthetic codes and processes of standardization. The author investigates the role the textile industry played in consolidating Italy’s image abroad, opening a broader reflection on the connections between politics, tradition and innovation.
During the talk, the author, Eugenia Paulicelli, in dialogue with Giulia Carluccio and Barbara Bergaglio, will offer the audience an in-depth and unprecedented perspective on the historical and cultural context of the city of Turin, considered in those years as the Capital of both Italian fashion and cinema.
With the participation of:
Eugenia Paulicelli, author of the book and professor at Queens College and Graduate Center of the City University of New York
Giulia Carluccio, pro-rector of the University of Turin, researcher and professor of Cinema, Photography, Television and Audiovisual Media
Barbara Bergaglio, head of CAMERA Archives
The talk costs 3,00€
