Alfred Eisenstaedt. Photography was in the air

Abano Terme, 16 May – 20 September 2026 + Venezia, 22 May – 22 November 2026

Alfred Eisenstaedt, the undisputed leading figure in 20th-century photography, is the focus of La fotografia era nell’aria (Photography Was in the Air), an exhibition project curated by Monica Poggi, produced by CAMERA, and organized by the Municipality of Abano Terme and D’Uva for MUNAV.

The exhibition is held at two venues, the Villa Bassi Rathgeb Museum in Abano Terme (May 16–September 20) and the Historical Naval Museum of Venice (May 22–November 22), offering a complementary journey that traces the career of one of the founding fathers of photojournalism.

From post-World War I Germany to the United States, where he settled in 1935 and became a legendary contributor to Life, Eisenstaedt chronicled the major events and leading figures of his time with extraordinary sensitivity. His 1945 photograph of Times Square, a symbol of the end of World War II, is particularly famous.
Through historical reportages, scenes of daily life, and iconic portraits—from Einstein to Marilyn Monroe—his work offers a rich, dynamic, and still-relevant visual narrative.

A project that celebrates the power of photography and the dialogue between places and institutions, bringing back to life that creative energy which, as the title suggests, continues to be “in the air.”
