È Olimpiade! Cronache da Torino 2006

Project Room | 26 February – 6 March 2016

On the tenth anniversary of the 20th Winter Olympic Games and the 9th Paralympic Winter Games and as part of the review “Torino 2006-2016 Il viaggio continua” (Turin 2006-2016… the journey continues), CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia pays homage with this exhibition to the event that brought the capital of Piedmont and its valleys to the centre of international interest and that represented a great occasion for bringing the city and its people together.

Divided into three sections, “È Olimpiade!” (It’s the Olympics!) through the power of imagery, seeks to illustrate the extraordinary nature of the event, bringing to the fore its complexity and success.

The exhibition opens a section that shows the reporting over those days, placing the front pages of La Stampa over the two weeks of the Games alongside those of the special editions found in newsstands and that were dedicated to the sporting event, as well as the results achieved by the Azzurri team. The exhibition retraces the great victories, the emotions and the unforgettable moments, without neglecting the historical context of the time.

A large wall is dedicated to the around 500 photos taken by citizens and brought together by the initiative “Racconta la tua Olimpiade” (Tell the story of your Olympics), which was open to all those in the city during the Games. The result is a large mosaic that brings together memories, emotions, stories, whether big or small, private or shared, of those days, all in a collective narrative that brings out the relationship between daily life and the Games.

The big events were not forgotten, told on two large prints that gather the public attending the exhibition and immerse it once again into the spirit of the Olympics. These included images from the opening night, which summarises into one moment the spirit of the entire event and reminds us of its greatness and values.
Further photos of main sporting events are also included among images of citizens, alternating personal moments with sports in action and colourful fans, reproducing the dynamism of the weeks of the Olympics.

During the White Night on Saturday, 27 February, within “Torino 2006-2016 Il viaggio continua”, CAMERA – Centro Italiano per la Fotografia will stay open until 00h00, with free entry to the “È Olimpiade! Cronache da Torino 2006” (It’s the Olympics! Reporting from Turin 2006) exhibition.
