Edward Weston. The Matter of Forms

12 February – 2 June 2026

CAMERA presents Edward Weston. The Matter of Forms, an exhibition organised by Fundación MAPFRE in collaboration with CAMERA, shown in Italy for the first time following its presentations in Madrid and Barcelona.

From 12 February to 2 June 2026, the exhibition brings together 171 photographs, offering an extensive overview of the work of Edward Weston (Illinois, 1886 – California, 1958), one of the leading figures of modern American photography.

Curated by Sérgio Mah, the exhibition spans more than forty years of Weston’s career, from 1903 to 1948, charting his development from early pictorialist experiments to his full emergence as a central figure of straight photography. The exhibition emphasises Weston’s role—as co-founder of the Group f/64—in establishing photography as an autonomous, rigorous and distinctly modern medium, in dialogue with and in contrast to the European avant-gardes.

Through black-and-white images of remarkable formal clarity, produced using large-format cameras, Weston explored still lifes, nudes, landscapes and portraits that have since become iconic. Deeply rooted in the American landscape and cultural context, his unmistakable body of work offers a unique perspective on the affirmation of photography and its central role in contemporary visual culture.
